As Dr. Mehmet Oz (Oprah’s fave guest doctor) says that: in order to tell if your body is ticking, you check your poop. A friend of a friend has a 4 month old puppy who as some serious issues. If you are Dr. Oz, a Mother wolf, or a human Dad…you will already know that in order to determine if your baby has a serious issue and they don’t have the means to communicate it to you, you must check the poop. So, the friend of a friend’s issue involves…poop.
Her 4 month old pup has a bit of a liquid issue. Serious enough that he pup is very skinny, there is no muscle development and her pup is destroying her entire household. My first question, is the pup on kibble? Damn right she is. This friend of a friend is curious about the RAW diet, she says that she has done some research and feels very overwhelmed by all the different online sources. She’s confused because her vet said, “let’s try this kibble instead” and then another vet said, “start feeding her a raw or homemade diet”. So, 2 vets with 2 totally different opinions on a dogs diet. Now the friend of a friend is asking me for my opinion…
My opinion is: FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS.
So your puppy is on kibble, which is the only thing she is currently ingesting consistently, and pup has some serious issues that’s keep you awake at night. You change to another kibble…still no difference. As a mammal on this earth and as a substitute Mother Wolf, are you going to keep feeding your now sick puppy more of the stuff that is making her sick? Damn right you’re not.
But how do you know that it is kibble that is making her sick? Well, how do YOU know it is bad oysters that make you run to the toilet in pain 45 mins later? How do you know it is an allergy to food or environment when you get a rash or your lips flare up from hives? Or when you eat something that causes a sore stomach so you start drinking a lot of water or take some Pepto, if you have neither on hand, you eat some bread or something fibrous. Yes my friend, you have an allergy.
In the wolf-world, does she have a strange rash near her armpit? Does she have chronic ear/eye infections that flares up? She’s “picked it up from the park” according to the vets, give her meds with steroids they suggest. Every time she poops, is it pure liquid? Poor baby. Does she ingest a LOT of water and therefore pee more than a 4 month old pup should? Is she dehydrated? Does she chew on wood? Eat her own poop or another dogs poop? Oops, there’s that ear flaring up again back to vets for more steroids. Stop scooting on the carpet! I swear Rover, what’s gotten into you? At the age of 8 months you discover that you have to brush her teeth 2 times a week? Yes my friend of a friend…your pup has an allergy.
Now what?
Follow your instincts. Think logically. Research. Find reliable sources. Listen to your instincts. Talk to people. Remember, your vet who is trying to sell you that $80 kibble to the left of the reception desk makes a buck or two on your purchase.
In your past life when you were a bison farmer in the 15th century…remember when you would cringe at the sound of wolves howling near your farm? You always knew that 2 of your bison would be sacrificed to the dogs - the leader of the wolf pack eating the liver (the most enzymes available in the whole animal). Strange how wolves, who have the same genetics as the present day dog, would CHOOSE to eat those bison in raw form, bone, heart, liver, meat, cartilage, blood and all. The crazy part? Wolves arose in the middle of the great Ice Age about one million years ago…and they have survived till now. Every dead wolf carcass found (aww), all their teeth are intact - no plague, no heart disease, no rashes.
What changed? In the 1850’s a young electrician from Cincinnati named James Spratt on his way into London saw his shipmates tossing “biscuits” overboard to the street dogs and landed on an idea to package and sell these biscuits to urban dog owners. By 1941, 90% of the dog food market was canned dog food, however, the kibble industry took off during World War II when the government started rationing tin and meat, thus canned dog food was replaced by voila…”biscuits” or kibble. Byproducts and “extras” that were inserted into biscuits as a result of the above mentioned war.
So my friend of a friend, ask yourself - do you really need to know what the vets opinion or what my opinion is on food? Most likely not. For you will now find, Mother Wolf, that you instinctively know what is best for your pup. Bring your pup back to the basics, bring your pup back closer to his genetic needs and for heaven sake, give your pups pour raw bum a break!
