Dolphin Burps.

October 14th, 2008 · No Comments

When I was a little girl I use to get in trouble for blowing bubbles in my milk. It was just a pure fascination with how much of the cup I could fill with bubbles, the colours, how long they would last before bursting, and how long I could go for before getting in trouble for being “inappropriate.” I’ve just learned that I’m not alone in this fascination…

If you visit Florida’s Sea World you will see Bottlenose dolphins playing with bubbles as well. Bottlenoses are known for demonstrating a strong propensity for playing with objects and each other – this is proof of that. These bubble rings are made from the air expelled from their blowholes and then by generating vortices around the bubble they are able to rotate them by 90-180 degrees. In some cases, as a way to show off their skills, they will increase the size of the bubble ring and swim right through it without bursting it. Most of the time you will just see them just mouth at it like a child who has just frothed up a milkshake.

Check them out in action:

“It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.”
