Enviro-Trend: SIGG Water Bottles.

May 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

It’s not what you drink, it’s what you drink it in.

-SIGG slogan

It starts in Frauenfeld, Switzerland with a hockey puck-sized chunk of recycled aluminum…

One swift 650-tonne thrust by the extruding press converts it to a hollow cylinder. Twenty-six manufacturing steps later the neck of the bottle is formed and the thread ring is inserted. A thorough cleansing precedes the baked-on (food safe) taste-inert stove enamel that is sprayed onto the interior. Then the finishing touches of a solvent-free powder paint bonded by heat, then the designs and finally the logo.

What’s so special about SIGG water bottles?

They are completely eco-friendly…

Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element that makes up almost 8% of the earth’s crust and is completely recyclable. It actually takes 95% less energy to recycle metal than it does to make it from the beginning. However, SIGGs are not only made from recycled aluminum but they are so durable that the 5% in recycling energy is not lost either because you will have this bottle for a long long time. All SIGG lids actually fit on all bottles no matter the generation, shape or the line (e.g. children, sport or tour).

They actually do what they claim they do…

The leak-proof bottle is actually, and get this, leak-proof. Should the bottle dent it will not cause damage to the interior coating because of it’s flexible nature. However I personally like the look of a couple of dings in the aluminum from over-use (makes it look well-loved and self-decorated).

The makers guarantee SIGGs to be taste-neutral, completely safe and compatible with all liquids including fizzy drinks or an early afternoon screwdriver. Most importantly, the substances used in the bottles are polycarbonate-free and thus absent of bisphenol A which Canada has taken steps to ban. The added bonus: water tastes like water! (Canine-approved)

And you can make SIGG part your Style Statement

I treat my SIGG like an accessory with my own personal slogan on it “Make love not landfill.” Others available say “Friends don’t let friends drink from plastic” or “Simply Eco-logical.” And that said, it’s your life, it’s your style and its your statement, why not make it with a water bottle?
