Interesting Amphibian: Chinese Giant Salamander

January 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I just love cool new creatures and animals that aren’t mainstream and readily available to the public eye. But in particular, this lil’fella is the coolest thing EVER. The Chinese giant salamander (family Cryptobranchidae). The “salamander that can grow up to 1.8m in length and evolved independently from all other amphibians over one hundred million years before Tyrannosaurus rex.”

Fascinating…

The salamander uses “sensory nodes on their head and body to detect minute changes in water pressure, allowing them to detect their prey.”

Like a lot of our precious animals, this guy needs to be protected and Giant Salamander Protection International is working hard to do that.
