Is that a Malignant Cell…or Art?

January 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Art –noun [ahrt] is defined as, 1.the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

In other words, it used to be just what Picasso or Ansel Adams produced. Now, the true artist can bring out the beauty in e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

It seems that there is a growing trend in the art world according to the blog Street Anatomy where “there is a Craftsman in all of us.” Literally. Medical illustrations use to be just that…medical illustrations. But now with technology beautifying a baby in a womb with 3D ultrasounds, the human body in it’s all natural form is the perfect subject. In the end, it creates visualizations of what goes on in the human body at a micro and macro level allowing time for us to really reflect on what magnificently complex living and breathing creatures are on this earth. Physical art is always a popular topic, but cellular art?

Gary Carlson is one such 3D graphic artist who finds inspiration in the scientific fact of our humble forms. Gary is a special artist though for he is what makes cells come alive and the human form something worth marveling over. In fact, if you sit far enough away his work it becomes a beautiful, flawless abstract form, and up close it looks like a divine prickly little colourful thing that can put a demise to our entire molecular structure.

Think about that for a moment…

Isn’t that what life is all about? Perceptions at a distance and truth up close? Exterior versus interior? Seeing the truth? Recognizing the unrecognizable?

You can find more of Gary Carlson’s work here and explore the wonderful bits and bites that make up YOU.
