Long before I can remember, I have loved elephants. It could have just been an instinct at first, but then as I grew up I learned how they were highly thoughtful, self-aware creatures, who have 3-dimensional thoughts, feelings and talents.
Cool facts about them thus far:
- A herd is lead by 1 female monarch
- The elephant is the largest animal that lives on land
- In the womb an elephant’s trunk grows longer than it’s legs
- In the womb an elephant develops air ducts normally found in freshwater fish but then disappear
- The trunk an elongation of their nose and upper lip that they use like a hand for rudimentary tool use
- They grieve and mourn the loss of their own kind
- Elephants tell human friends from foes by scent and clothing color
- An elephant can paint its own portrait…
Yup, it’s true - check this out:
There is a lot more ongoing research with elephants, I can barely wait to see what they discover next!
