It is a beautiful thing this Portobello West Market.
It is a bit of a hidden gem and a dirty secret of mine that I often hold dear to my heart and often lie when people ask me where I got something from to keep this bit-of-gold a secret. Instead, I will offer up the designers name. Soooo, me giving you this dirty little secret and posting it on my blog is a big step for me. Most of my family lives St. Catharines, Ontario and visiting Toronto is not an option normally because of the insanity of it - I’ve nicknamed Toronto ‘Cement City’ for obvious reasons. In the end, they are stuck in the hideous world of Niagara to find cool things on very rare occasions. So if any of my St. Catharines readers out there have any gems they would like to share, please let me know and I’ll be sure to post it. But I am very skeptical that there is anything worth mentioning other than it’s wine (supposedly - but I’m not a wine drinker). The point is that I purchase all my gifts for them at these markets, and they love them! Really, you can’t go wrong with on-of-a-kind shopping.
Back to Portobello West. The experience takes my breath away in that it is a ‘warehouse’ type of idea where all the greatest local designers set up a booth the last Sunday of every month and show off their recent designs, ideas and the such. If you have to buy for babies this is the place to be (I’m still waiting for a designer to get on the wave of cool masculine dog collars). So this Christmas season, get out of the fucking malls (yes, ‘fucking’ is the right word to use there) and support those locals designers who have one of a kind pieces that can’t be found anywhere else.
I’ll mention her again, Meghan Dru of Dru’s Designers clothing is awesome. Still waiting for her woman’s clothing to go online, but I suspect it is a bit of a moving target for Meghan. She also has her Dru’s line at a store in Vancouver called Shop Cocoon. You can find her men’s T-Shirts line called Identity Apparel online. Her stuff is original and affordable. Love it.
Now I’ve entrusted you with my perfect-gift-giving secret, I ask that you hold it dear to your heart as I have. I’m off to the Market now! I’ll pick you up something special…
