Practical Pet Fur Use: Chiengora Yarn

My Gramma French use to say that her sheltie, Crystal, shed so much that she could weave her dropped dur into a coat. Well Gramma, here it is…

Located in Denton, Texas Vip Fibers specializes in homespun yarn made from the fur of your pet and historically speaking, this is not unusual. Chiengora dates back to pre-historic Scandinavia, and is found in materials from the North American Navajo Indians and the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. There are benefits in chiengora that exceed that of regular wool and for native tribes the most important factor was its warmth - it is roughly 80% warmer.

Ultimately, the texture of the finished product will depend on the breed and health of your dog, and the length and layer of coat you want to use; undercoat fur will result in a softer, halo looking yarn and long top coat will be a more lustrous yarn. The process of collecting the fur consists of brushing your pet (with a slicker brush or undercoat rake) as often as you need to and save the fur that has been removed in a breathable cotton pillow case. You can also save the clippings from a visit to the groomer however the key is to get the longest, softest fur possible. The amount that you need to collect is based on your yarn needs and an average pillowcase is about 50 ounces, enough for a Crystal-sweater.
