The Comet.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s been done. It’s been said. The topic of sisters has be exhausted. But I bet you feel this way because you have never met MY sister before.

Hi, My name is Hopefully-She-Will-Be-As-Smart-as-Her-Big-Sister…nice to meet you. Although I’ve yet to match my sister (aka. The Comet) in ever aspect of our lives even till this day, I hope that I don’t disappoint you by boring the snot out of you with this blog. (I really do try to be as witty as I can, but alas, my big sister got the witty gene and I get to use the word snot)

Growing up The Comet sure hated me. The closer I tried to get, the further she would push me away. If she liked slouch socks, I liked slouch socks. If she liked the Primus band t-shirt with the ugly scribbled pig on it, I liked it too and never told her that I couldn’t stand their music (cats out of the bag now!). She was my trend setter. I dressed well for my age because she was always down-with-it and she took pity on me by lending me her cool neon bracelets. Damnit if she didn’t alway set the expectations so high that I could barely reach them most of the time. Acedemics, athletics, popularity, piggy bank money. I lost at all of those competitions when up against her. I guess that is why I am such a good loser now - she made me a pro.

Ok, so that’s pretty typical stuff. Litte sis, looks up to big sis. But what you don’t know about her is that she always had a way of balancing her crazy side with her normal side. She was so clever and she never got caught. Oh yes, but don’t you worry my faithful readers, the day she was married, I tattled-taled on her BIG time in my wedding speech…oh what a great day that was had by all! You see, she has this whit…this cleverness…this flare for being the b*tchest-sweetest person you could ever imagine. How’s that for an oxymoron. But by ‘b*tch’, I mean it in a good way! She’s who I could never have the guts to be - I admire her for that. Everyone loves her. EVERYONE. It’s like they respect her ‘way’ because they know she’s always right all the time and they accept being wrong. See, she can sometimes come off as as harsh if she wants to, but man’o'man, is she ever a big softy underneath all of that (don’t tell her I told you). The b*tchy side kept all those 11th graders from teasing me - awww. Why of course she did you dummy! Because that was her duty that she took very seriously and would accept nothing less. It’s a sister thing I guess and I appreciate every second of it.

The Comet lives life in a way that you could call it nothing less than an abstract drawing. (if she were to read this, she would likely tell me to speak English and to stop being a floozy). But really - she has this way of being in the moment, whatever it might be. She puts her heart into that second of the day, at that very perfect moment in time, into the person’s whose eyes she is talking to. Is it any surprise that she is a teacher? Not really. With the aura of a queen, the humour and flexibility of a court jester, but the ruling of a king…no wonder the kids in her class pay attention. She is changing the world, one child at a time, and only my sister has that skill.

So what makes her so entertaining to you? I wish I could describe it, and now I’ve realized that I’ve started a blog on a bit of a moving target in that she’s not just some easy definition I could pluck from the sky. Her the sense of humour that she carries in her back pocket that is like a weapon. She is the only person I know who can tease me and I actually end up laughing at me! Figure that one out! But, that’s her way…laugh at yourself, it’s “cool.” That said, she also teaches people with disabilities. Why does it matter? Guess it doesn’t. I really think sometimes that she believes that everyone has a disability…and she’s right. We all have our demons, our habits, our physical inabilities, our baggage and our quarks - we are all the same that way and the best way to get over it is to laugh. Damnit all, she’s right again. I swear that girl could sell water to drowning monk.

Why the comet?

A comet is a small body in the solar system that orbits the Sun and (at least occasionally) exhibits a coma (or atmosphere) and/or a tail — both primarily from the effects of solar radiation upon the comet’s nucleus, which itself is a minor body composed of rock, dust, and ice. Comets’ orbits are constantly changing; their origins are in the outer solar system, and they have a propensity to be highly affected (or perturbed) by relatively close approaches to the major planets.

Because she is so freaken tough to comprehend, so driven, so wanting to live simply…just to live complicated and if you step back far enough away you will see that all those years she was making you a better, stronger person without even realizing it.

I’d like to finish this blog with a song that I hold close to my heart and is a constant reminder that I’m not alone when I’m lost, so I’m not going to let you be alone either…
