Every wonder why some dogs are real beauties, while others are…not?
You know what I mean. You see a dog prancing along the path, head held high, chest puffed out, tail in relaxed position, muscles flexing with each stride or fur flowing in the gently breeze. His stride flawless, like he’s floating on a cloud. His white fur is so white that it looks florescent in the sun. His black fur as dark as night. He catches your eye, and holds your attention and commands your admiration…but how and why does he hold that power?
I pose that question to you because I use to ask myself that question. What was their secret?
8 years and 1 puppy later I’ve become the owner of a dog who is a beauty. How do I know? Every 30 minute walk, turns into a 60 minute because of people asking me questions. Without sounding like I’m bragging (which is not my style) I did a little test. How many comments, inquiries, and compliments wolf gets per walk. The last walk, 14 times in a 60 minute walk. Other dog owners stop and ask me how I keep his teeth so clean, breeders ask me what shampoo I use on him, how I have Berner with no bone or joint issues or who the breeders are.
I also noticed that Wolf gets humped all the time. Is it a fluke? At first I thought it was. Until I started paying attention to the gender of the dog. Interestingly…all male. I know, it’s a sign of dominance but what was it about him that projects must-hump-him vibes? He’s definitely not a dominant male dog. He’s been in the presence of “Rover, what’s gotten into you? You’ve never done that before” or “Rex, leave the poor dog alone” and then the domino effect of the other dogs following Rex to hump the wolf. Why does Rex not hump Rover? Why is Wolf always getting the brunt of their humps? It’s quite embarrassing for both owners.
So after this last trip of 14 comments and 9 different dog humps later I asked myself: what was it about him that cause this reaction in humans and dogs alike?
I don’t know the answer to that question scientifically. But what I do know is that there is something special about the Wolf. I have considered the bias that exists in such a blog…but I’ve also talked to a lot of people who are not biased and confirm this information for me.
My answer to them? My secret is a truly healthy dog. One that lives as close to his wolf ancestry habits and diet as I can possibly allow in my lifestyle.
I ask that you do research on the Timber Wolf yourself and challenge you to give your canis lupus the closest possible life to that of a wild wolf. Then, sit back and watch the compliments roll in…
