When I was in University I took a 2nd year Psych/Philosophy course (as an elective) were we learned about the nature of reality. Naturally, we then learned about perceptions and the differences in the way people perceive life in their own reality. Being the person I am, I compared some of my learned theories to my own life in order to remember them on an exam. One such theory seemed to be specifically linked with the 3 reindeer that my Mom insisted on hanging up every year for Christmas. My brother, sister and I all had the same kindergarten teacher (bless your heart Mrs. Lees) and every holiday season she asked her students to make a reindeer out of construction paper. The finished product was one reindeer that looks like it was a skeleton head, with ears and with red eyes (my brother’s), one that looked quite similar to a reindeer except for huge drawn on happy face with human-like teeth (my sister’s), and one that had a round head, with bright blue eyes, pink nose and mouth (mine). And there we have it, Professor Bradley’s ‘Perception Is Not Reality’ theory in practice. It sounds a lot more simple than it actually is, especially because one could easily argue that a child does not have the capability to express their perspective of a reindeer. But at the time, it worked and got me an awesome grade.
This blog does have a point…stay with me…
A few years later I find myself giggling over a little online discover similar to Prof Bradley’s theory. The Sheep Market is a site where over 10,000 people have contributed to it by drawing their interpretation of a sheep. Of course everyone’s looks hilarious with a few exceptions who look like they have a pen and tablet to do their art. But still, it’s the little things that make everyone’s sheep special in their own way. You can’t tell the ethnicity, the culture, the age, the weight or the hair colour of the artists and that’s what makes it so cool. In the end, we are all just trying to draw sheep the best to our ability using the tools we’ve been given. A lack of knowledge kind of makes us more accepting of others people’s sheep for some reason, doesn’t it? Interesting…
Here’s my favourite sheep:
