Blonde By Nature

I’ll confess that I like to investigate earthly creatures that look like aliens. So when Shell Oil Company’s remotely operated vehicle recently captured this footage of a Magnapinna, or “big fin” squid I had to shine a spotlight on this creature for you. As it is rarely seen, not much is known about this type of squid mainly because of it’s deep water habitat, so no marine biologist can really speak to it. Even the omnipotent magnapinna wiki page is lacking details on it.

The footage was captured on seafloor in the Gulf of Mexico at the Perdido Shell site on November 11th. Perdido is one of the world’s deepest oil rigs. It appears that more and more valuable scientific footage is surfacing from these sites and as a result some scientists have created partnerships with the oil companies.
