What Story Does Your Clothing Carry?

October 20th, 2007 · No Comments

I have not spoken about my place of business as of yet in this blog. Mostly because I find my profession quite shallow in many ways…helping the rich get richer isn’t my idea of a lifetime career and I’m using it as a stepping stone. (Special note: I’m aiming to get into the animal industry now, just trying to figure out how to do that successfully). That said, the company has amazing people under the roof and is very inspiring to work for in many ways.

This ‘inspiration’ comes from the idea of “Storytelling.”

An ancient method of history-keeping. Communication from the heart. Messages that are remembered because they are felt. Often the key to good storytelling is to provoke a mental picture in the listeners mind so they remember the story, they want to share the story and they want to live the story.

I love supporting local talent. In particular, local clothing designers. Their pieces are unique, they have a statement and they have heart. My first love? Meghan Dru of “Dru’s Designs”. She has two lines of clothing: a women’s boutique line and a men’s t-shirt line called Identity. Meghan, still waiting for your women’s line to go online!

Recently I stumbled upon Elroy. The clothing is very modern, clean and stylish. Not particularly MY style when mixed altogether, but bits and pieces look great. However, there is something that grabbed my attention even more. The question on her website, “What story does your clothing carry?”

So, what story does your clothing carry? Interesting. I started to dissect my clothing…

I wear black Lululemon pants everyday - have about 6 pairs (different lengths and shapes). That’s what I wear to work everyday. Shoes? Uggs. I have two pairs, the ultra black talls and the ultra short chestnut. Shirts? Usually fitted shirts that are very comfortable in feeling. Sometimes a belt high on my waist. Sometimes a sweater. Sometimes skull and cross bone strategically placed. Really…does any of this surprise you after reading my blog?

My message: she’s comfortable, grounded, not afraid of hard work, prepared for anything, likes routine but likes to shake things up in her own way, and is (ok) slight girly. A couple of my friends call me Charlie because they say I dress like a Charlie’s Angels. By wearing what I wear, I’m sharing my story. Do people remember it? Yes…the name Charlie stuck. Guess my friends thought that my Charlie-name was worth sharing with others because new acquaintances met through those friends know me as Charlie.

So, I ask you, what story does your clothing carry?
